PRODUCTS: Christmas trees, pinecones, and other holiday decorations

FARMLAND: 40 acres in the Sierra Nevada mountains, 20 miles east of Nevada City, about 150 miles from the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market.

PEOPLE: Nan and Bill Krelle, with occasional help from their daughter Natalie and her husband Peter, and their son Scott and his wife Shannon

FARM PHILOSOPHY: Double K Christmas Tree Farm prides themselves on selling long-lasting, old-fashioned, sustainably grown Christmas trees. The farm is located 5,000 feet above sea level next to a national forest. Bill is a licensed professional forester and he currently plants ten new trees for every tree harvested. Also, to help sustain the land, every tree harvested is left with a whorl of branches, enabling the cut tree to recycle itself into another tree. Many of the large trees are preserved to give the farm a forested appearance similar to the surrounding national forest. The trees are also raised completley without pesticides.

WATER USE:The trees are watered only with rain and snow.

ORGANIC CERTIFICATION: None.

FUN FACT: Nan and Bill harvest and sell Silver Tip Christmas trees, which have won the State Grand Champion Award from the California Christmas Tree Association many times.
