PEOPLE: June Taylor and one full-time assistant ABOUT: June Taylor was born in London, England and grew up in a family where much of the food was grown by her father in their garden. June studied Home Economics in high school representing her only formal training in the food arts. She started her business in 1987 and dedicated her artisan company to the creation of handmade preserves. June works year-round with seasonally available fresh fruit. All the work is done by hand--cutting fruit, cooking, pouring and jarring and labeling--and in a scale similar to home production. Each pot cooked on the stovetop yields an average of 8-10 jars. Inspiration for June’s work has come from historical roots in British preserving and she attempts to revive heirloom and forgotten fruits and creates flavors by infusing flowers and herbs grown in her own garden, a tradition in early preserving. SOURCING: All of the fruit June buys is grown organically or ecologically, and the majority is sourced directly from local farmers, some of whom attend the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Organic sugar is used in all of June’s preserves, and they do not contain commercial pectin. |
