PRODUCTS: Granola

PEOPLE: Tristan Kampman and Luke Winter along with a small team of full-time employees

ABOUT: Galaxy Granola was started in Marin County with the goal of creating great-tasting granola baked in fruit purees instead of oil. All ingredients are mixed by hand, spread onto large sheet pans, and baked in large ovens. Galaxy Granola gives 1% of its sales to environmental organizations. The Surfrider Foundation is the largest recipient to date, which is no surprise since both Tristan and Luke are avid surfers.

SOURCING: About 80% of the ingredients in Galaxy Granola are organic, including all oats, spelt and barley, which are the basis of the granola. Grains come from a San Francisco-based mill that sources from West Coast farmers. Natural flavors come from a Los Angeles-based company. Galaxy sources fruits and nuts from a variety of suppliers locally (about 50%) and nationally.

FUN FACT: Because they bake their granola in fruit purees, every bag of Galaxy Granola contains the fruit equivalent of 3 apples, versus about a cup of oil used for baking most other granolas!
