Eat Local Day a Success

Yesterday, over 150,000 diners at 190 corporate, university, and museum restaurants from Seattle to Washington D.C.had the opportunity to eat a 100 percent locally grown meal, made entirely of ingredients from within 150 miles of the kitchen where they are served, thanks to an Eat Local Challenge created by Palo Alto-based Bon Appétit Management Company. The challenge was created to raise awareness about where the food on our plates comes from. To learn more, visit: www.eatlocalchallenge.org/website/eatlocal.html

This Week’s Feature: Remembering Jeff Young

We are saddened to share with you that the market lost a true friend and amazing farmer this week with the passing of Jeff Young, after a long illness. We will remember Jeff for his perfect gem lettuce, sweet butternut squash, delicious peppers, and of course, beautiful flowers that were painstakingly arranged by his partner Joelle the evening before market. Jeff was incredibly particular – from how he grew his products to how he displayed and marketed them. He had an exceptional knowledge of farming that was reflected in all he produced. Those who get to the market before sunrise on Saturday morning are familiar with the sight of an all-but-empty back plaza save Jeff Young’s impeccably arranged booth catching the first morning light. Although friends and family will work to continue operating Jeff Young Farms until the end of the season, the farm will likely not be back in the market next year. We will long remember and miss Jeff’s bright eyes and quiet smile.

Please visit the CUESA information booth this Saturday to sign a card for Jeff’s family and dear friends.
